If you’ve ever wandered through the Market with a craving for the crunch of a perfectly crisp apple or fresh produce, chances are you’ve stopped by Thompson’s or Michael’s.
The stall has been serving locals and visitors alike for over 40 years with new owners Tai (pictured with wife, LinhChi), LinhChi and Balbir taking the reins of Thompson’s a decade ago, and Michael’s three years ago. But for Tai, the Market isn’t just about business — it’s about community, culture and connection.
There’s a rich history here,
he says. Every day brings someone new. From office workers grabbing lunch, to visitors from overseas to school kids learning where their food comes from.
When it comes to his favourites, the answer is easy: apples. But not just any apples — locally grown Adelaide Hills apples which are crisp and crunchy. When they’re in season, they’re unbeatable,
he says. We even have overseas customers asking to take them home as gifts.
For first-time visitors, he has just one recommendation: Try the Missile Apple. They are the best, sweet and super crunchy.
Or his favourite go-to snack is a quick visit to Adelaide Nut for roasted corn and freshly roasted beer nuts.
I love the Market vibe and it’s been like this as long as I can remember. I used to come here with my uncle to help at his stall in the early 90’s,
he says. I remember how cool some of the apple displays were. Now being a stall owner, I have tried to recreate them and it always brings back happy memories.
So, what’s his tip for newcomers?
There’s a unique vibe especially Friday and Saturday where lots of people are enjoying food, unique products and make sure you discover our fresh fruit and veg. The Market really has something for everyone!
Visit Thompson’s Fruit & Veg at Stall 26–28
and Michael’s Fruit & Veg at Stall 53–54.
