Our Community
Since 1869, the Adelaide Central Market has formed a strong connection with the community, as a welcoming place for local, tourists and visitors alike to shop and discover good food and fresh produce. We endeavour to make a valuable contribution to the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of our precinct and community, and all whose lives we might affect. Here are a few examples of what that means in practice.
OzHarvest Adelaide
Since 2012, OzHarvest volunteers have rescued the equivalent of 264,520 meals from our Traders, safely delivering it to South Australians in need. That’s 132,260kg of good quality surplus food saved from land fill, 872,916kg of greenhouse emissions prevented through avoiding food waste and 45,629,700 L of water saved. This means we’re helping to build a sustainable food culture where food wastage is reduced and more people can access a fresh, nutritious meal.
During the lead up to Christmas in 2024, we helped the OzHarvest Adelaide raise $4.4k through the Tree of Goodness, thanks to our generous customers.
Our partnership with OzHarvest Adelaide throughout the year helps to raise awareness and raise funds to support the operations and resourcing of the critical work they do. The funds raised help to keep the food rescue vans on the road and keep delivering the food to those who need it the most.
Catherine House
Catherine House offers crisis, longer term accommodation and support services for women experiencing homelessness in South Australia. All programs and services are recovery-orientated and provide trauma informed care. Catherine House deals with the immediate issues created by homelessness and supports women in planning a future that helps her sustain housing and builds a life that is meaningful and purposeful for her.
We are proud to partner with Catherine House by supplying fresh fruit and vegetables every month, as ordered by their cooks to meet their specific needs. We are the major in-kind food donor for Christmas Day lunch for the women at Catherine House, and provide an auction item every year for their black-tie fundraiser.
Reconciliation Initiatives
The Adelaide Central Market is located on the traditional Country of the Kaurna people. We pay our respect to Elders past and present. We recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land. We acknowledge that they are of continuing importance to the Kaurna people living today. And we also extend that respect to other Aboriginal Language Groups and other First Nations.
