Tucked among the colour and bustle of the Market is a little pocket of Portugal in the form of Saudade, a stall sharing their love of the humble Pastel de Nata (Portuguese Custard Tart). Although Saudade officially opened at the Market in April 2022, its story began much earlier — a short stint as Producer in Residence in 2017 sparked the dream that led to a permanent home.Owners Carla and Miguel love the Market’s vibrancy, where fresh local produce sits alongside international flavours and artisans share not just their goods, but their stories. They say Saudade fits right in, and they appreciate the strong sense of community among stallholders.

When asked for a favourite, Carla doesn’t hesitate: “That’s easy! Try Portuguese custard tarts fresh out of the oven… with cinnamon on top.” Their tarts follow a traditional recipe, using high-quality local ingredients to create light, smooth custard wrapped in crisp, flaky puff pastry. Handmade and baked fresh daily, one bite is often all it takes for customers to understand why Saudade is a must visit.

When they have a moment to explore the Market, Carla and Miguel are drawn to Lucia’s paninis, a slice of pizza from Atlas Pizza, or weekend meat supplies from their neighbours at O’Connell’s Meats.

As for the Market atmosphere? “It’s vibrant and buzzing — especially on Fridays,” Miguel says. “There are always events celebrating local produce and international culture. There’s something fresh and unique for everyone!”
