Our Tasting Australia Program is LIVE!

Our Tasting Australia Program is LIVE!

In our 150th year, we are thrilled to announce our Market will join South Australia’s food and wine industry to celebrate the state’s premium food and wine offering during Tasting Australia 2019 from 11 to 14 April 2019. As we are just a short walk from Tasting Australia’s hub in Victoria Square, we are hosting a series of free and ticketed events throughout the week, featuring an outstanding culinary line-up of South Australia’s best chefs, Market traders, and artisan producers.

A Time Travellers Feast:
Imagine travelling back in time to sample the flavours, sights and sounds from 150 years of Adelaide Central Market history. This is your chance. The way the market’s produce (and South Australian tastes) have changed over a century-and-a-half reveals intricate stories about the fabric of our community and its unique food culture. This adventurous four course long table lunch will be a feast for the senses. Some of South Australia’s hottest chefs will serve up a menu inspired by the years 1869, 1919, 1969 and 2019. They’ll use ingredients created by the multigenerational producers whose families have been supplying the market for decades. This culinary odyssey is a once in a lifetime travel experience, not to be missed. Guests are encouraged to embrace the journey and dress inspired by their favourite era. Book your ticket here.

Women In Food Breakfast:
It started with seven stools and a tiny kitchen in 1957, when migrant Lucia Rosella arrived from Italy and opened a tiny kitchen at the Adelaide Central Market to sell pizza. A trailblazer of her time, and unknowingly paving the way for generations of women to come, Lucia created a South Australian icon that continues to thrive. Join us for breakfast made with love by Lucias and hear from our panellists, chef and owner of the Salopian Inn Karena Armstrong, owner of the Smelly Cheese Shop, Say Cheese and Dough Valerie Henbest, and Michelle Farinola of Samtass Bros Seafood talk about what it means to be a woman in the food industry today and how we can shape the future for the next generation. Book your ticket here.

Our free cooking demonstration program is highlighting the incredible produce found in our Market and the amazing chefs around SA who use our Market as their pantry. Find out more here.

Pick the Right One: Peaches!

Pick the Right One: Peaches!

When you think of summer fruits, peaches immediately spring to mind. Their sweet flavour and luscious texture make them the perfect summer time snack and a fruit bowl staple! Our Market is currently filled with different peaches, each perfect in their own way…

White Peach
Calling the peach “white” refers to the inside flesh – but these delights are also distinguishable from the outside, as they paler and pinker than yellow peaches.  White peaches have a sweet flavor and are more delicate, making them more prone to bruising. We recommend enjoying them fresh and simply, like with ice cream!

Yellow Peach
Yellow peaches are most likely what you picture when you dream of peach season. They have warm, golden inside and deep reddish outside. When you eat them fresh, make sure they are ripe and ready! You can use less ripe ones to cook with, the heat will soften them and release their sugars, making them super sweet! We recommend enjoying yellow peaches with savoury flavours – check out our recipe for our char-grilled peach salad with prosciutto here.

Donut Peach
These little peaches have been popping up around our Market over the last few weeks, grown right here in SA! They have a light flesh and super sweet flavour. PSA: They are slightly less prone to dripping!

Nectarine
Although some people think nectarines are different to peaches, they are almost genetically identical, except for their fuzzy skin! Just like peaches, nectarines come in white and yellow varieties and are just as delicious to enjoy this February!

Happy 60th Con’s Fine Foods!

Happy 60th Con’s Fine Foods!

Cons Fine Foods this year celebrate 60 years in our Market!  It was 1959 when Con Savvas set up Cons Fine Foods, seeing an opportunity to sell European cheeses and continental meats to the migrant community.

To celebrate this milestone, Cons Fine Foods will be launching their antipasto cones – be one of the first 60 people to say “Happy Birthday Cons Fine Foods” on Friday 22 February 2019 from 6pm to receive your cone for free!  Its their way of saying thank you to their loyal customers.

Cheese After Dark Masterclasses are back in 2019!

Cheese After Dark Masterclasses are back in 2019!

Being a real curd nerd requires time and dedication. The Smelly Cheese Shop‘s after dark classes are held once the Market has closed its doors for the day and offer an exclusive experience to visit the Market ‘after dark’.  These classes will give you a chance to explore the complex flavours and the incredible variety of cheese produced by skilled artisan makers world wide while learning about the various conditions in which they are made and matured. Your taste buds will be challenged with different styles of cheese while learning about the basic rules of sensory analysis so you will go away with the knowledge required to understand and really appreciate fine cheese.
