For 18 years, Theo has started his mornings the same way – surrounded by the aroma of freshly baked bread, sweet treats and preparing for another lively day at the Adelaide Central Market.

As the face behind Market Bread Bar, he’s become a familiar presence to generations of Market shoppers, serving up artisan breads, European favourites and large range of gluten free treats and breads.

What keeps him motivated after nearly two decades?

“It’s being able to provide unique products and exceptional service,” Theo says. “And ultimately, seeing happy customers with a smile on their face in a dynamic environment like the Market.”

His top recommendations for first time visitors is to try their Seeded Rye Sourdough, golden Spanakopita, Cheese Kransky and the much-loved Kataifi.

“If I had to choose just one, it would be the Kataifi,” he says. “It brings back childhood memories.”

It’s the connection to tradition and to people that makes the Market so special to Theo after all these years. “It’s so unique. It brings people together from all different backgrounds and nationalities over good food. It’s unlike anywhere else.”

After 18 years, it’s not just the food that makes this place home. “I have customers who have been coming to my stall since I started here,” he says. “I feel very honoured and privileged to be a part of their lives.”
